The New Bremen School Board meeting opened at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Dianne Komminsk Center for Innovative Thinking, 901 E. Monroe St. in New Bremen.
The meeting began with the pledge of allegiance. There were no special presentations, so the meeting progressed to Mrs. Kramer. Kramer said she was preparing for testing this year. She noted that first and second grade are up, which is good, but third grade is down so they are working more with them to get the classes ready for their testing. Kindergarten is about the same as last year. The school is also participating in 18 hours worth of student dyslexia training. It is broken down into 5 days, with 6 hours of training each day. There are 65 students enrolled for kindergarten screening this spring and nine of these students are outside of the school district and have taken the opportunity of open enrollment.
Parent-teacher conferences will take place on Nov. 15, 17, and 18. The school had the opportunity to meet with Oakwood High School, and they want to continue reaching out to other districts to see what they are doing to improve their districts and possibly implement some of these changes in their own district. Eighth grade students are currently on their trip to Washington, DC and it is going well. The school has partnered with Champion of Nutrition. The “Teacher of the Month” was Maria Homan (seventh through twelfth grade), Emily Mescher was this month (seventh through twelfth grade) and Lindsay Roiberg for Elementary grades.
Security is improving around the school. Busses and equipment will be moved into the garage starting tomorrow. There is a need for 10 insulated garage doors for the garages. The total cost for this project is expected to be $48,000, which will be funded by general funds. Mr. Burkt requested a resolution for using these funds.
The motor in the room that houses the computer servers went bad. It will take 53 weeks to install the replacement. The back-up unit will be there in a couple of weeks to keep this room cool for their servers.
The Chrome books lack guardian controls currently that monitor and set boundaries 24/7 365 days a year. Therefore, in the second semester, an app will be available to parents so they may better monitor their children's online activities.
The school accepted a $200 donation to the “no shame” lunch fund.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. after there were no questions, comments, or concerns.
