Area chili and soup enthusiasts can support a local cause as Salty Heifer Fans is raising funds for the Wayne Township Fire Department through a chili/soup cook off Saturday Oct. 9. Owner Missy Hefner approached Fire Chief Albert Presnell about the fundraising idea.
“Our local fires/rescue is a volunteer department and means so much to many families. As a small token of appreciation we decided to ask for support from our community and raise some proceeds to help our local department,” Hefner said. It is $5 to taste and vote for a bowl of chili. Judging is at 6 p.m. They will have a 50/50 drawing, raffles, and door prizes. Cover Band Fairly local will also be playing starting at 8 p.m. All proceeds from the chili / soup cook off will go directly to Wayne Township Fire Department.
“It is the right thing to do as we have been so blessed by so many. Our ultimate goal is to do anything we can to show them we care about each of them,” Hefner said.
Presnell said they will use the funds for training and equipment.
“We are funded by the tax payers, but alot of the stuff we want to upgrade is very expensive,” Presnell said, adding they would need help purchasing it.
He said funds would help cover the cost of having officials come in for extrication training or water shuttle training as well as some equipment.
A total of seven people will be competing so far on Saturday. Presnell will be making potato soup.
