Wapakoneta's Kohler wins WBL match; Redskins 2nd

Wapakoneta senior Shelby Kohler found herself at the top of the leaderboard Wednesday in a tournament among the four Western Buckeye League schools sponsoring girls golf.

With just four schools hosting the sports, the WBL does not sanction girls golf as a varsity sport and therefore does not have a league championship.

Kohler shot an 89 to lead all players Wednesday at Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance, while she and the Redskins were second overall with a team score of 410.

“I am so excited for Shelby,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said Wednesday. “The pin placements were extremely tough with fast greens, and she hit some very good golf shots to keep herself in the hunt the entire round.

“She didn’t show too much emotion at any point in the round. She stayed very level,” West said.

Kohler was one of five players named to the tournament’s first team.

“This is an awesome accomplishment to win the individual WBL title in her final season as a Redskin. I am very proud of her Wapakoneta golf career,” West said of Kohler. “We didn’t talk about it being her last WBL tournament but we both just knew. She went out and did what any coach wants their leader to do, go out work hard and leave it all on the table and bring home a win.”

Also for the Redskins on Wednesday, Emily Klopfenstein had a 105, Zoe Rayburn shot a 107 and Sierra Sammons totaled a 109.

“Overall, as a team, we really played pretty good,” West said. “However, we slipped a little coming down the stretch and made some big numbers on the back nine where Defiance stepped up and played better on the back.

“Eagle Rock is a great golf course and home course knowledge is definitely a bonus. Defiance did what they needed to do,” she said. “This was a good step for us in getting ready for sectionals in two weeks. I’m excited for that next opportunity.”

Wapak will next compete in a Division I Northwest District sectional tournament Oct. 2 at Sycamore Springs Golf Course in Arlington, from where the top three teams and the top three individuals will advance to the Division I Northwest District tournament Oct. 8 at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green.

Defiance won Wednesday’s tournament on its home course at 396. Celina was third, while Shawnee finished fourth.

Defiance’s Maddie Glassford (90), Lindsay Froelich (93) and Marissa Behringer (94) and Celina’s Kelly Stahl (98) comprised the remainder of the all-tournament first team.
