CELINA — The Wapakoneta Redskins grabbed a third-place finish Friday at the Celina Bulldog Girls Golf Invitational in varsity action at Fox’s Den Golf Course.

The Redskins shot a team total of 388, edging host Celina (390) for the third spot.

Wapakoneta senior Shelby Kohler finished sixth overall with an 18-hole score of 88.

“Shelby had a good round today,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said Friday. “I know she was a little disappointed in her finish as she wasn’t hitting her low irons well, but she was doing a good job of staying in the round.

"This round should show that on her off days she’s still very competitive,” West said. “She should be proud of her sixth-place finish.”

Zoe Rayburn carded a 96 to finish second for Wapak. Sierra Sammons was third with a 99. Emily Klopfenstein was the fourth total at 105.

“I am very happy with the start we have had this season. To grab a third-place team finish right off the bat at the Celina Invitational is a great boost of confidence for the ladies as we get the season going,” West said. “They’ve had a great first couple weeks of the season.”

West further evaluated her team at this point in the young season.

“Where we will see consistent improvement is in our putting as we go along. The girls are really striking the ball well from tee to green, but we need to keep working on taking fewer putts on each hole. A lot of that will come with more tournament and match play.”

Versailles captured Friday’s team title with a score of 358, while Van Buren was runner-up at 362.

Coldwater’s Kelsey Koesters took medalist honors with an even-par 72, a school record.
