VOLLEYBALL: Big Green bounces Tigers

ELIDA — The Waynefield-Goshen Tigers hung tough, but could not overcome a strong Ottoville Big Green squad in a Division IV volleyball sectional semifinal Wednesday at Elida High School.
The Big Green (9-11) were taller and deeper and fed a relentless line of power hitters to the front row in a 25-19, 25-11, 25-16 sweep of W-G.
“I think my girls faced up to that rather well,” Tigers coach Karen Dunson said. “They talked and they moved. We got some plays on the net that I think were really nice. Once they got used to the game, we were picking more stuff in the back.
“We’re not used to playing some of the hitters like we played tonight. But I’m very proud of my girls.”
Ottoville used a big rally in the first game to take control. With the score tied at 10-10, the Big Green went on a 9-1 run to take a 19-11 lead. W-G regrouped and rallied. Freshman Sydney Buffenbarger’s ace closed it two within three, 19-16. But Ottoville held off the charge to take the first game 25-19.
The second game was all Ottoville as junior hitter Abbie Siefker recorded six kills and a block to lead the Big Green to a 25-11 win.
But the Tigers didn’t back down.
Down 5-1 early in the third game, they fought back and even took a 10-8 lead, forcing a Big Green timeout.
Junior hitter Bailey Collins had a pair of kills and an ace during the rally. Junior Kaylee Patton had two kills.
But with the scored tied at 15-15, Ottoville went on a 7-0 rally to take control and pull away to a 25-16 win.
“That’s something we’ve battled all season long, trying to make my girls realize how much potential they have,” Dunson said. “So I’m very happy to see that they faced them, didn’t back away, and gave it their best shot.”
Collins finished the match 24-of-28 hitting with five kills and four blocks.
Patton was 13-of-17 hitting with two kills and a block.
Buffenbarger had five assists. And senior Jessica Reimesch had five digs.
W-G concludes its season with a 7-17 record.
