Trojans win sectional after penalty kicks

The Botkins Trojans won a sectional championship Saturday in a shootout.

Botkins prevailed 4-3 over the Casstown Miami East Vikings in a Division III Southwest District boys soccer sectional final in Casstown.

The win advanced Botkins to the district level.

After a 1-1 tie after regulation and two scoreless, 15-minute overtime periods, the match turned to penalty kicks to determine the winner.

After six kickers, Botkins prevailed with four goals to three.

The Trojans missed their first PK attempts before Botkins senior Aaron Schipper put the Trojans on the scoreboard.

Botkins goalkeeper Christian Hoskins saved the next Vikings kick to even the goals at 1-1 after three rounds.

The two teams each made their next two PKs, with Botkins’ Jacob Barnettt and Eric Egbert each scoring.

Micah Smock nailed the next kick for Botkins before Miami East missed its attempt, clinching the sectional title for the Trojans.

Trojans freshman Joseph Shuga tallied the regulation goal, with Kyle Maurer on the assist.

Hoskins had 21 saves Saturday for Botkins.

The Trojans will face the Yellow Springs Bulldogs in a Division III Southwest District semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Franklin High School.

The winner will advance to a district championship match to face the winner of Reading and Cincinnati Seven Hills at 7 p.m. Saturday at a site to be determined.
