Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman

Staff Sergeant Sonny C. Zimmerman, 25, of Lima, formerly of Waynesfield, was killed in action Tuesday, July 16, 2013, in Afghanistan.
Sonny was born Aug. 21, 1987, in Lima to Michelle (Turner) and Chris Zimmerman. His father survives in Waynesfield, his mother survives in Waynesfield, and his step-father David Fischbach, survives in Ottoville. On Sept. 30, 2012, he married Morgan McGhee, and she survives in Lima.
Also surviving are a daughter, Riley McVicker; his grandparents, Loretta and Ronnie Zimmerman, of Waynesfield, and Lucy Turner, of Bellefontaine; two sisters, Kaylee Zimmerman, of Waynesfield, Staff Sergeant Baily Zimmerman, of Pope AFB, N.C., a step-brother, Andy Fischbach, of Nebraska; a step-sister, Abby Fischbach, of Columbus; his mother- and father-in-law, Chrisa and Kevin McGhee, of Lima; a brother-in-law, Matt McGhee, of Lima; and a sister-in-law Nici (Andrew) Wright, of Alexandria, Ky.
Sonny was a 2005 graduate of Waynesfield-Goshen High School, a member of Waynesfield United Methodist Church, an avid Ohio State University Buckeyes fan, Cleveland Browns fan and Detroit Red Wings fan. He played roller hockey and while attending high school he played football and baseball. Sonny was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Airborne Division, where he was an infantry squad leader. His awards included a Purple Heart, three Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, three Afghanistan Campaign Medals, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non Commissioned Office Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Ribbons, NATO Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Air Assault Badge.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School, with U.S. Army Chaplain French and the Rev. Kathleen Hays officiating. Burial will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery in New Hampshire.
Friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday also at the school.
Contributions may be given to “Wounded Warriors” in Sonny’s memory.
