SOFTBALL: Bath bats too much for Wapak

The Bath Wildkittens scored early, and they scored often.

Bath quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and continued to pound the ball throughout the game in a 10-0, run rule-shortened win over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity softball game Friday at Wapakoneta High School.

The lineup hit from top to bottom.

“We have been hitting like this all year,” Bath varsity coach Laura Ford said. “It is what makes us so dangerous. We can come through with some short game mixed in with our power hitters.

Leadoff hitter Camille Martin put an exclamation point on the win, putting a 2-1 count pitch over the left-center fence to make it 10-0. Bath pounded out 15 hits on the night and had at least one hit in every inning.

In the meantime, they didn’t need to hit nearly that well. Sophomore Kimmy Reynolds shut down the Redskin offense on three hits while striking out five.

Despite the loss, Wapakoneta varsity coach Bill Sammons had plenty of positives to take out of the game. The Redskins put the ball in play for the most part despite getting only three hits and are still on a learning curve. When asked about how good a team he thought Bath was, he defended his team’s overall performance this season.

“We’re a pretty good team too,” Sammons said. “We knew coming into the game that they would hit and we simply had to outscore them. Obviously zero isn’t enough. But we are a young team and we are going to continue to get better. We put the ball in play but they have some fast girls that can get to the ball in a hurry.”

Wapakoneta mounted its only scoring threat in the third inning. Trailing 5-0, Ashlie Cox and Stacy Miller connected for back-to-back singles and Elizabeth Martin reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Reynolds buckled down and fanned three successive batters to end the threat. Courtney Knippen had the only other hit for the Redskins.

Bath is now 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the WBL. Wapakoneta fell to 7-5 and 3-2 with the loss.

The Redskins host Bellefontaine today for a double-header starting at 1 p.m. Bath travels to play Archbold.
