Silent auction benefits Mercy

A silent auction is to benefit Mercy Unlimited while also highlighting some of the donations the thrift store receives each year.
“We’ll be auctioning close to 75 items — housewares, glassware, furniture, lamps and artwork,” said Mercy volunteer Linda Johns, who is coordinating the project.
Everything to be auctioned has been donated.
“We receive some beautiful stuff,” Johns said. “We’ll be auctioning vintage items and antiques, plus some newer items, some of which have never been used or are still in the original box.”
No clothing is to be included in the silent auction which begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, and continues until Oct. 28. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, when the auction ends.
The auction is to be held in the front eastern portion of the Mercy Unlimited thrift store, located at 38 E. Auglaize St., in Wapakoneta. A specially designated area within the doors is to include all items to be bid upon.
Johns said they decided to hold the silent auction based on the success of an earlier one this year in July.
“We had such great response from the community and more than
60 bidders,” Johns said. “We’re looking for even more this time.”
She said future plans are to have silent auctions at the thrift store every couple of months to highlight new donations.
“It’s a fun thing to do. A lot of people in the community enjoy auctions and it gives donated items exposure. People can see the beautiful things we have here,” Johns said.
Proceeds from this silent auction and any future ones are to be put toward overhead costs, including mortgage payments, utilities and telephone bills, at the store. Money raised is not applied toward payroll.
Since Mercy Unlimited is a Christian organization, it does not receive government funds to operate.
Johns invited anyone in the community to come into the store during the auction, get a bid number, keep checking the bid book and bid as often as desired on as many items as wanted.
