Scholastic eligibility on table for W-G high school athletes

The Waynesfield-Goshen Local Schools Board of Education met for their regular meeting on Monday night, but it was athletics that dominated much of the conversation.

According to the school's Athletic Handbook, the scholastic eligibility standards currently require that student-athletes maintain a passing grade in each course. A failing grade in any one subject would bar the student from participating in athletic events, including scrimmages and practices.

Ohio High School Athletic Association standards only require that a student maintain passing grades in 5 subjects.

Before voting to approve the policy in the Handbook, Board members expressed a desire to relax the policy, bringing it closer, if not directly in line with the OHSAA policy.

A specific point of contention with the standards was its effect on students.

At an earlier point during the meeting, the Board discussed and ultimately moved to amend the district's Mission Statement, further emphasizing creation of opportunities for students.
