Rice Krispy contest at library underway

With the success of last year’s contest, the local library staff will be hosting another Rice Krispy Art contest for area residents.

The director Auglaize County Public District Library says she is excited for the second ever Rice Krispy Art Contest and believes the event should be fun for all ages again.

“It’s a fun activity for everyone to do,” Director Beth Steiner said. “It’s a creative thing to do as a family.”

Steiner said they had such a great response when they host their annual gingerbread house contest at Christmas time, that they wanted to host another event to create edible art.

“We had such a good response with the gingerbread houses, and it is a busy time of the year, and not everyone could do it,” Steiner said.

She said they planned it during the spring, as it is a less busy time, and people can prepare for spring by being creative and making edible art.

“It (last year) was a good start to the program. We received a variety of sculptures,” Steiner said. “It was very creative.”

From edible Easter baskets filled with colored Rice Krispy eggs to Spongebob, the library was filled with Rice Krispy designs last year, and Steiner is excited about receiving the edible artwork this year.

All entries must be submitted at 2 p.m. by March 31, and each entry will receive a prize. Prizes have been purchased by the library or donated by a local business. There will be a first place winner who will take home a $50 Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a second-place winner, who will take home a $25 gift certificate and a third-place winner who will receive a $10 gift certificate.

Entries will be judged by members of the Riverside Art Center on originality, overall appearance, choice and use of materials and difficulty of design.

Winners will be announced on April 2 and the Rice Krispy Art will be on display at the library during the month of April.

“This is not only fun, but a fun art display for the library,” Steiner said.
