Redskins shut out Cougars in last WBL match

The Wapakoneta Redskins’ bats came alive Tuesday as they cruised to a run-rule victory in five innings.

Solid pitching from junior starter Chace Culver and home runs from a couple of seniors lifted the Redskins over the visiting Van Wert Cougars.

Senior left-fielder Brandon Miller hit a solo home run in the 4th inning, then a couple of batters later senior right-fielder Andrew Hines hit a 2-run home run  to give the Redskins a 7-0 lead.

“We came out and did all the aspects of the game right today,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Jason Brandt said. “We played good defense, got good pitching from Chace and we had really, really good hitting.

“We had good drives to the fence, over the fence,” he said. “Everybody in the lineup from top to bottom did a good job and contributed one way or another.”

Brandt talked about Miller’s progress this season. Brandt said Miller struggled at the plate at the beginning of the season.

“Brandon has really been coming alive in the last couple of days,” Brandt said. “He’s been working really hard in batting practice lately, and he’s really doing a good job of seeing his pitches. He got a hold of one today down the line.”

Miller, as he was trotting around third base after his home run that cleared the left field wall, told Brandt, “I’ve been waiting a long time for that.”

After the game, he laughed and said that it had been too long.

“It felt really good, it’s great to finally have that feeling back that I can do it,” Miller said. “Off the bat, I thought it was foul, and it was a great feeling that I had hit the home run. It’s long overdue for me.”

Miller said it’s not a bad time for the bat to finally get going. Wapakoneta starts their tournament play Tuesday.

“I guess if I had to pick one time to get it going, this would be it. This is when it matters,” Miller said.

Culver pitched 5 innings allowing zero runs and four hits. He didn’t walk any batters and he struck out seven.

“A great outing for Chace, really a great day for everybody,” Brandt said.

Wapakoneta finished their WBL season at 7-2.

Wapakoneta plays a non-league game at Celina tomorrow.
