Local men ride for St. Jude research dollars

Two hundred sixty miles is long way to go in a car, let alone a bicycle, but don't tell that to Andy Haag or Shawn Watt.

Just before the New Year, the two Wapakoneta natives did just that, riding their bikes from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Key West over the course of a few days–all while raising a staggering $9,435 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"It's a very good feeling and sense of accomplishment that did something fun and exciting," Haag said, "but also did something for a worthwhile cause, too."

Prior to their trip, the pair pulled together donations from around the Wapakoneta and surrounding community, receiving sizable pledges from both individual and corporate backers, quickly surpassing their $2,500 goal.

Eventually, the pair flew by their second goal of $5,000, then past their third and final goal of $7,500.

"I'm glad we tied the trip to raising money because it made the trip even more meaningful. It's a very positive, good feeling and we'll definitely do it again," Haag added. "It's a good sense of accomplishment and the support we received was humbling."
