Shelby Kohler and the Wapakoneta Redskins each placed fourth Thursday in the Defiance Lady Bulldog Golf Invitational in varsity girls golf play at Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance.

The Redskins totaled 423 shots Thursday.

After shooting an 88 for 18 holes, Kohler settled for fourth place overall after losing a tiebreaker for third-place medalist. She lost on the second playoff hole.

"I am very proud of the way Shelby has played the first two invitationals of the season," Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said. Hohler was sixth overall Aug. 9 in the Celina Invitational. "She has really matured in her golf game and in her ability to hang in there and regroup to finish in the top five.

"She gets that a golf round isn't determined by one shot or even one hole and she plays hard till the last putt," West said.

Sierra Sammons was second for Wapak with a 108. Haley Kinstle followed with a 112. Zoe Rayburn carded a 115 to finish Wapak's scoring. Emily Klopfenstein had a 116.

"Sierra and Emily really showed growth today from the where they were at this time last year," West said Thursday. "I am really excited for what's to come from this team."

West commented on her team's finish as a whole Thursday.

"We started off slow, giving up a lot of strokes early on to chipping and putting but then were able to manage a lot of good holes, including pars down the stretch, showing a lot of determination that these ladies don't give up and want to keep improving," West said. "We are a young team with the ability to shoot low. We just need more rounds under our belt so that it comes more naturally. We are learning how to attack the golf course and not play so passively. When we figure that out, we will be tough to beat."

The Redskins will have their first home event of the season today, as they host Bellefontaine at 1 p.m. at Wapakoneta Country Club.
