County residents are also affected by shutdown

While the national media continue to report on federal workers affected by the on-going government shut down, the affects of that shut down are being felt locally.

In Auglaize County, the 1,300 families that use SNAP — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — face uncertainty about future assistance.

Jobs and Family Services Director Michael Morrow said earlier this year that SNAP coverage would extend only through February; there is no continuance plan in place after that. Those payments for February are expected to come early and recipients need to make those dollars stretch.

“We really need to have our clients understand to budget that to get through that month,” Public Assistance Director Amy Freymuth said. “We’ve never been in a government shutdown for this long.”
