SWIMMING: Kremer, Miller headed to state meet

February 22, 2012

The photographer asked Ryan Kremer for a “game-face” pose.

Kremer clenched his face, looking as tough as he could, for all of three frames before a smile burst onto his face.

He was having too much fun.

And who could blame him?  Prior to his freshman year he spent his winters as a benchwarmer on the basketball team.

His cousins swam at Delaware High School and suggested he take up the sport.  So he did.

Boy, did he.

BASKETBALL: Mechanicsburg ousts Botkins

February 22, 2012

SIDNEY — By controlling the paint both offensively and defensively, Mechanicsburg ousted Botkins, 61-41, in the second round of the Division IV Southwest District Tournament Tuesday night.

With the loss, Botkins ends its season with an 8-12 mark. The Indians, now 17-4, advances to the quarterfinals against the winner of the Fort Loramie contest.

Trojans varsity coach Don Mack said the Indians’ defense proved to be the difference in the game.

February 18, 2012

Andy Faller and Kaleb Vondenhuevel were in the seventh grade the last time the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys basketball team won a Western Buckeye League game at home.

Friday night, in the final home WBL games of their careers, the two seniors saw the five-year drought come to an end.

Wapak overcame a sluggish start and held off the Shawnee Indians for a 63-58 win.

The Redskins had not won a league game at Wapakoneta High School since defeating the Celina Bulldogs on February 23, 2007.

BASKETBALL: Redskins routed

February 17, 2012

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Shawnee coach Jeff Heistan couldn’t remember ever seeing anything like it.

And Wapakoneta coach Rusty Allen didn’t ever want to see it again.

Heistan’s Indians blasted out to a 29-2 first-quarter lead and steamrolled their way to an 82-46 win over Allen’s Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls basketball game Thursday at Shawnee High School.
