Donald E. Whetstone, 77, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Wapakoneta Manor. He was born Aug. 30, 1936, in Lima, the son of Virgil and Mabel (Hines) Whetstone, who preceded him in death. On June 18, 1955, he married Rita G. Place, and she survives.
Survivors include, three children, Deborah (Mike) Stolzenburg, Melanie (Gary) Runkle and Derrick (Leeann) Whetstone, all of Wapakoneta; five grandchildren, Tim (Gerry Ann) Stolzenburg, Troy (Nikki) Stolzenburg, Jesse (Kim) Emrick, Brock (Adrian) Whetstone and Amanda Whetstone; eight great-grandchildren, Damien and Cameron Emrick, Aidan, Lainey and Isaiah Whetstone, Addison, Colton and Ava Stolzenburg; s sister-in-law, Sharon Whetstone, of Lima.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Whetstone.
Don worked as a heavy equipment operator with Peterson Construction in Wapakoneta. A 1954 graduate of Buckland High School, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie #691, and the American Legion Post #330, both of Wapakoneta. He was a former member of the V.F.W. Post #8445, in Wapakoneta, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, in Celina. He restored a 1929 Model A Ford and enjoyed participating in and attending car shows.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, state Route 501, Wapakoneta, with Pastor Adrian Sunday officiating. Burial is to follow in the Buckland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Wapakoneta Manor.
