The Wapakoneta Redskins had a solid season opener Saturday in the Findlay Duals wrestling tournament, going 3-2 in five dual matches.
The Redskins edged the Elmwood Royals, 32-31, handled an All-Star Team, 50-15, fell to the Eaton Eagles, 45-24, nipped the Whitmer Panthers, 37-34, and lost to the Bellevue Redmen, 42-34.
In each match, the Redskins left three weight classes empty.
“I was impressed with the wrestlers on this team,” Wapak varsity coach Jason Rostorfer said. “We were behind in every dual by 18 points because of voids. We have had some minor things keeping guys out of our lineup, but these guys stepped up and wrestled well.
“We seem to be ahead of were I thought we would be,” he said. “These guys put a lot of time in during the offseason and it showed. I like what I saw today.”
In the 132-pound weight class, Wapak freshman Tyler Copeland went 5-0 on Saturday in his high school debut.
“He faced some very tough kids,” Rostorfer said of Copeland.
Also going undefeated for Wapak on Saturday was senior Jarred Carpenter at 220.
Carpenter won four matches by pin in the first period and the fifth by forfeit.
Drew Robenalt (126), Jordan Kaeck (145) and Landon Hall (182) each had four wins for Wapak.
The Redskins will return to the mats Thursday at home to host the Kenton Wildcats, the Celina Bulldogs and the St. Marys Roughriders in a Western Buckeye League tri-match.
Wapak will face Kenton and Celina.
