Carl Francis Thomas, 88, died at 4:25 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Wapak Manor.
He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Spencer Township, Allen County, to Bertha M. (Burtchin) and Jesse J. Thomas, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 20, 1946, he married Betty M. (Lowe) Thomas, who died June 7, 2000.
Carl retired Jan. 1, 1990, after more than 43 years as a boiler maker and maintenance worker at SOHIO, BPA Refinery.
He was very proud of serving his country during World War II, enlisting in the U.S. Marines on May 13, 1943, and serving for the duration of the war. He participated in action against the enemy at Roi and Namur, Marshall Islands 1/31 – 1/28/44; at Saipan and Trinian Marlanas Islands 6/15/ - 8/10/44; at Iwo Jima Volcano Island 2/19/ - 3/16/1945. Mr. Thomas saw the first American flag raised on all of these islands.
Carl was a member of Eagles Aeries 370, a life member of VFW Post 1275, Lima Refinery Club, SOHIO and BPA Quarter Century Club, Bath Community Church, formerly Bluelick United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Rex J. (Jean) Thomas, of Wapakoneta; two daughters, Carla J. (David) Lockemeyer, of Lebanon, and Kimberly A. (Larry) Fairburn, of Lima; a daughter-in-law, Debra A. “Deb” Thomas, of Lima; a grandson, Cory (Alexandra) Thomas, of Philadelphia, Pa.; a grandson, Jarred (Erin) Thomas, of Burbank, Calif.; a granddaughter, Ashley (Eddy) Thomas, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a grandson, Ryan Lockemeyer, of Lebanon; a grandson, Alex Lockemeyer, of Lebanon; a grandson Kyle Lockemeyer, of Lebanon; a grandson, Shawn Fairburn, of Lima; a granddaughter, Jamie (Mat) Gallaspie, of Wapakoneta; a granddaughter, Kristie Fairburn, of Lima; great grandchildren, Athos, Aiden, Gavin, and Alivia; special extended family Rhonda (Todd) Ghassabian and their children Kai’ana and Solivia, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a brother, Richard (Alvena) Thomas, of Wapakoneta; a sister, Alvena Conley; of Ada, a sister-in-law, Sylvia Lowe, of Lakeview; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by son, Bruce A. Thomas, who died Feb. 23, 2013, two brothers, Harold Thomas and Virgil (Mary Jane) Thomas; and one infant sister.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services Eastside Chapel, with the Pastor Charlotte Hefner will officiate.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be by VWF Post 1275 and the U.S. Marines.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
