The Wapakoneta Redskins’ three-match win streak ended Friday in a 193-211 loss to the Minster Wildcats in varsity girls golf action at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
For the first time this season, none of Wapak’s players broke 50 for a nine-hole round.
Shelby Kohler (50) led the Redskins in Friday’s match.
Emily Klopfenstein followed with a 52, Sierra Sammons shot a 53 and Zoe Rayburn tallied a 56.
“Unfortunately for us we did not have a very good showing tonight,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said Friday. “We seemed to be a little jittery off the first tee and never quite got settled in.
“We made some mistakes in where we needed to be around the greens. If we needed to stay short of the green, we went long and over, generally short-siding ourselves which makes for a difficult chip.”
West discussed her team’s progress behind Kohler, who has led the team in every event this season.
“We are so close to breaking through in that 2-6 position in having a great team and individual scores,” West said. “They are all bunched right there, all making similar mistakes and having way too many putts.
“The person who gets their short game figured out the soonest will pull away from the pack and be out in front of most teams with Shelby,” she said. “We need that second and third score to help relieve some of the pressure off Shelby every match.”
West said her team is determined to improve.
“On a positive note, not one of these girls is satisfied with where they are at in their golf game,” West said. “They are working hard and trying to better their games each time they come out to play, and I definitely respect any athlete that does that.”
Minster’s Marissa Conrad was the match medalist with a 42.
Claire Fisher posted a 44 for the Wildcats.
Wapak will resume its schedule at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday with a home match against Parkway.
