The Botkins Trojans finished as the runner-up out of nine schools Tuesday in the Shelby County Preview in varsity boys cross country action at Anna Elementary School.
Botkins girls team was third overall out of six full teams Tuesday.
Botkins junior Austin Jones took third in the meet and was the top runner among Shelby County Athletic League teams.
“He ran a great race,” Botkins varsity coach Ryan Gutman said. “He worked hard all summer long. It was neat to see him run the way he did.”
Botkins sophomore Chloe Flora was the fourth-place finisher Tuesday with a time of 21 minutes, 7.3 seconds.
"She’s put in so much hard work,” Gutman said. “She deserved that finish.”
The Botkins boys tallied 70 points behind winner Russia’s 59. Anna was third at 73.
Scoring in the top five for the Botkins boys were Roger Miller (18:40.9), Aaron Fullenkamp (18:46.1), Lucas Beuhler (19:58.8) and Drake Woodruff (20:35.9).
Botkins’ girls scored 89 points. Russia took five of the top seven spots for 23 points and first place. Completing the scoring for Botkins’ girls were Kayla Heuker (23:41), Bethany Christman (25:05.8), Tayler Weatherhead (25:53.6) and MacKenzie Brown (26:37.2).
“A lot of the high schoolers weren’t ecstatic about their times. We’ve ran in mid-70 degrees pretty much all preseason and tonight it was in the mid 80s. Heat played with everybody’s time,” Gutman said. “It was about them racing. They raced well. I was happy with it. There’s some thing to build on there.”
Botkins will continue its boys schedule Saturday at the Bob Schul Invitational hosted by Milton-Union. The girls will resume their schedule on Aug. 31 at the Grove Invitational at Columbus Grove.
