Norma Jean Hunt-Smith, 75, of Wapakoneta, and Okemos, Mich., went to rest in the arms of the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013.
She was born Feb. 19, 1938, in Detroit, Mich., to Lena and Sylvester Shanklin, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 5, 1960, she married B.W. Hunt, and they shared a long, happy life until his passing on Nov. 8, 2002. Norma once again found happiness when she married her long-time family friend, John M. Smith, on July 24, 2010, and he survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Cheryl A. (Derrick) Ebidon, of Spring Lake, Mich.; a son, Gary A. (Kimberly) Hunt, of Holt, Mich.; three step-daughters, Billy Jean Campenella, of Sacramento, Calif., Sandra K. Furton, of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Joyann C. (Joseph) McDevitt; seven step-sons, Gary L. (Carol) Smith, Ronald W. Smith, Gerald A. (Debra) Smith, Kevin D. (Traci) Smith, John M. (Wendy) Smith Jr., Dean R. (Janet) Smith, and Marc G. (Michelle) Smith; four grandchildren, Matt, Trevor, Justin and Sarah; a great-granddaughter, Amalya; 27 step-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth M. Fleming, of Lake Orion, Mich.
Preceding her in death were a son, Jimmy Curtis Owens, and a step-son, Brian C. Smith Sr.
Norma enjoyed many years working in retail services at Knapps, Horner Woolens, Hudsons, Marshal Fields and Macys. Norma had been an active member of the International Women’s Sorority of Beta Sigma Phi, becoming a lifetime member in 2008. She was chosen woman of the Year while serving as treasurer and social chairman of her local chapter, Laureate Beta Sigma.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 5589 Van Atta Road, Haslett, Mich., with the Rev. David Davis officiating.
