PHOENIX — Brian Garman arrived Wednesday in Arizona to begin rehab at the Milwaukee Brewers’ spring training facility in Phoenix, as the Wapakoneta native continues to be on the shelf with an injury.
Garman, a pitcher for the Huntsville Stars, a Double-A minor league baseball team of the Southern League based in Huntsville, Ala., is attempting to nurse himself back to health after suffering a torn labrum earlier this summer. He has been on the disabled list since June 24.
Upon arriving in Phoenix, Garman was re-evaluated by on-site trainers and therapists, who confirmed the labrum tear. All medical evaluations, however, have indicated the labrum tear is not causing the symptoms keeping Garman from playing. Rather, Garman said he has been told his injury is an impingement or tendinitis.
“I’ll start playing catch based on how I feel,” Garman said late Wednesday in Arizona. “It’s going to be a day-to-day thing.”
Garman said he has not been given a timeline as far as his return to action.
“I have no idea how many days I’ll be in Arizona. Hopefully, it doesn’t take too long to get back to normal,” Garman said. “It could be a matter of days, it could be a matter of weeks, but hopefully not months.”
An MRI conducted July 2 on Garman revealed the labrum tear. The MRI was ordered after a throwing session was halted July 1 when Garman did not recover from an original injury to the shoulder, forcing his DL stint.
At the time he was placed on the DL, this season Garman had 1-0 record, a 4.25 ERA and 22 strikeouts.
Garman said he found out Tuesday that indeed he would be headed to Arizona, knowing it was a possibility as much as a week ago.
The Stars resume games today after being off Monday due to the Southern League’s All-Star break.
Garman, who will turn 25 years old Friday, said Thursday he was planning a visit to Wapakoneta during the break but the trip to Phoenix disrupted that plan.
Garman attended the University of Cincinnati for baseball and was drafted in the 17th round of the 2010 MLB draft by the Brewers. He is a 2006 Wapakoneta High School graduate.
The Brewers are Huntsville’s MLB parent club.
Garman has spent parts of two seasons with Huntsville.
