Calvin L. Slattery, 83, of New Bremen, died at 2:38 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1929, in Wapakoneta, the son of Lillia (Weifenbach) and Eugene Slattery. On July 10, 1953, he married Esther M. Fogt, who preceded him in death on March 22, 2001.
Surviving are two daughters, Kay (David) Shapiro, of Cullowhee, N.C., and Kim (Dave) Dougherty, of Cincinnati; four grandchildren, Sarah Shapiro, of Atlanta, Aaron Shapiro, of Cullowhee, N.C., Sean Dougherty, of Calabasas, Calif., and Ryan Dougherty, of Cincinnati; and two sisters, Gereldine Metzger, of St. Marys, and Imogene Mox, of Delphos.
Preceding him in death were three sisters, Dana Slattery, Althea Ruedebusch and Mary Jane Scheufler; and a brother, Byron Slattery.
Mr. Slattery was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen. He was a member of the F&A Masonic Lodge of St. Marys and the Scottish Rite of Dayton. He was also a member of American Legion Post 241 of New Bremen. He served with the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers during the Korean War, building bridges in Korea. He was a 1947 graduate of Blume High School of Wapakoneta. He retired from the Minster Machine Company where he had been a cost accountant.
Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, with the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.
Friends may caall from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
