A newly formed group to support the Wapakoneta Public Library is looking for community input.
The Friends of the Wapakoneta Public Library is sponsoring a contest as it searches for a logo that would be easily recognizable and reflect the mission of the group.
“There has never been a group like this to support Wapakoneta Public Library,” said Barb Harrod, who serves as the group’s president.
But with almost all the other libraries in the county having such “friends” groups, Harrod said the organization of such a group here is long overdue.
“Most public libraries across the state (and probably the U.S.) have a support group such as this,” Harrod said.
“Due to state funding cuts in the past few years, this group will be even more important in the growth and prosperity of our library,” she said. “Even though our library is financially stable, the funds from the Friends group will enable it to do so much more hopefully.”
The Friends of the Wapakoneta Public Library’s mission is to promote understanding and appreciation of the library, and sponsor programs to help support library services and technologies, while working to maintain and focus public attention on Wapakoneta’s quality library.
Friends of the Library Vice President Carrie Knoch said they are just starting to organize but are hoping to provide the library with support through fundraising efforts and to help with special projects. Approximately 20 people are working together to help organize the group with a membership drive planned in the future.
“Over the next two months, we hope to really get the word out about our organization and start promoting it,” Harrod said.
The Friends of the Wapakoneta Public Library Board plans to review submissions for the logo contest and make a final section. The winner will be contacted once selected, at which time the logo is to become the sole property of the Friends of the Library and all rights to replicate the image will be given to the Friends of the Library. The winning logo is to be featured on stationary, websites and social media sites sponsored by the Friends of the Library and is expected to be used for future fundraisers. The winning logo’s designer is to be awarded with a $25 Wapakoneta Chamber of Commerce gift certificate.
