BASKETBALL: Tigers topple Hornets

RAWSON — When the hard ones won’t fall, you have to make the free ones.

Waynesfield-Goshen did just that, overcoming a tough shooting night to pull out a 63-53 win over the Cory-Rawson Hornets in a non-league varsity girls basketball game Thursday night at Cory-Rawson High School.

The Tigers shot a paltry 14-of-52 (27 percent) from the floor for the game.  But they more than made up for that with a 29-of-39 (74 percent) performance from the free throw line.

Cory-Rawson, meanwhile, was 19-of-54 (35 percent) from the floor and just 6-of-16 (38 percent) on free throws.

W-G had to bounce back after the Hornets jumped out to a 17-12 first quarter lead.  The Tigers responded with a 22-10 second-quarter effort to take a 34-27 lead at the break.

They extended the lead to 47-36 after three and held on down the stretch for the win.

W-G junior Kaylee Patton led all scorers with 22 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds while dishing out five assists.

Ivy Horn and Lidia Turner added 10 points apiece for the Tigers.

W-G finished the regular season 11-9.  It opens postseason play in a Division IV sectional semifinal at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at Kenton High School against the Upper Scioto Valley Rams.
