DEFIANCE — Nicole Brown and Tasha Helmstetter apparently found Defiance High School’s gymnasium to their liking.
The Wapakoneta Redskins guards lit up the Defiance Bulldogs for a combined 37 points on nine 3-pointers to lead the Redskins to a 58-48 win in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls basketball matchup on Thursday.
Brown, a junior, scored a team-high 20 points, connecting on 6 of 11 (54.5 percent) three-point attempts. Helmstetter, a senior, knocked down 3 of 5 attempts (60 percent) on her way to 17 points.
Junior Annie Henderson contributed to the long-range assault with two three’s in four attempts for six points.
As a team, Wapak was 12-of-25 (48 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Redskins jumped all over Defiance in the first quarter, racing out to a 17-4 lead. The Bulldogs chipped two points out of the lead in the second quarter, cutting it to 27-16 at the break.
But Wapak responded coming out of the lockerroom and put together a 20-12 run in the third quarter to stretch the gap to 47-28 after three and held on down the stretch.
Ashley Fogle and Lakesa Young scored 15 points apiece to lead Defiance.
The win lifted Wapak to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the WBL. Defiance fell to 1-11, 0-5 WBL.
Wapak won the junior varsity game 55-19. Megan watt led the way with 12 points. Lea Stoner added 10 points. And Sarah Horman chipped in with eight.
The Redskins return to action Tuesday at home against the St. Henry Redskins.
