Auglaize County has successfully gotten rid of a wide array of surplus items online, especially as renovations have been made to the courthouse.
“It’s been a wonderful tool for us,” Commissioner Doug Spencer said. “We’ve gotten a lot of hits.”
Spencer noted items continue to draw attentlon on the county’s website located at auglaizecounty.org and then by clicking on an online auctions icon.
The site is operated by Lightgov.com, but maintained locally by the county administrator.
Spencer said using a digital camera to take a picture of items for sale and then posting them to the website is a lot different than the process the county used to sell surplus years ago when items had to be moved to the fairgrounds for a traditional auction and then moved back again if they didn’t sell.
“This is such a simple concept,” Spencer said of the online sales. “It’s saved us a great deal of time in disposing of our surplus.”
The site is used to sell personal property, motor vehicles, road machinery, equipment, tools, supplies, and anything else no longer needed for public use, which has become obsolete, or is unfit for use.
Items are posted on the site for at least 10 days with terms and conditions of the sales attached.
Commissioners are charged 6 percent commission only on items that sell through the site.
Spencer said the site also has provided an additional advantage because they have been able to post an extensive list of supplies and equipment being sold as part of the courthouse renovation project.
“We’ve gotten rid of everything from a beautiful handrail to office furniture and mirrors, items no longer needed in the courthouse,” Spencer said.
He encouraged everyone to visit the site and check back periodically as the items available constantly change. A truck used by the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is expected to be posted soon.
“People really seem to look and be interested in what we may have for sale next,” Spencer said.
