WAYNESFIELD — Despite poor shooting from beyond the arc and from the field, the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers still had a chance for a win against the neighboring Allen East Mustangs.
Missed shots doomed the Tigers Saturday as they lost for the second time during the 2011-12 campaign Saturday, getting beat by Allen East, 50-47, before a Waynesfield-Goshen home crowd. The Tigers fall to 1-2 on the season.
“I think that we didn’t take control of the ball and our shooting needs to improve,” Tiger varsity coach Ted Patton said, as he watched his team hit only 3-of-23, or 13 percent, from behind the 3-point line and 18-of-58, or 31 percent, from the field.
Trailing 19-15 at the end of the first quarter, the Tigers picked up their effort in the second quarter.
The Tiger defense kept Allen East off the board for the first 4 minutes of the quarter before Mustang junior guard Jadin Salyers hit a 3-pointer. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ offense started to click, scoring 21 points, to grab a 36-26 lead.
To start the second half, Allen East returned the favor. The Tigers struggled to score with the only basket for Waynesfield-Goshen coming on a shot by junior center Kindsey Salyer-Watts with 50 seconds left.
The Mustangs scored 15 points to take a 41-38 lead.
The teams traded scores in the final quarter as the Mustangs left Waynesfield with their second victory of the season.
The Mustangs were lead by sophomore guard Erin Conkle with 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Kacee Rowe hit for 15 points and 14 rebounds, with Salyers scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
“We picked up pace,” Mustang varsity coach Jarrod Wehri. “Patton is a nice player and took absolute control.”
With 27 points and 15 rebounds, junior guard Kaylee Patton continued her hot pace through three games as she recorded another double-double. Behind her was Salyer-Watts with 25 rebounds and six points.
The Lady Tiger’s hope to handle the ball better and improve scoring offensively before they play against McComb at 6 p.m. today at home.
