The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team placed third at the Western Buckeye League tournament Friday at Wapakoneta Country Club.
The tournament was delayed for an hour because of rain. Once it resumed, there were few surprises as the Shawnee Indians rolled to the win.
Shawnee carded a team score of 351. Defiance was second at 383. Wapak shot a 400. And Celina took fourth with a 435.
“The conditions were not the best this morning, but the girls worked through that and played well,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “We have worked all season long to be prepared for the 18-hole tournaments at the end of the season (WBL and sectional), to be able to play better on the back nine then the front nine and today we did exactly that.”
Medalist Shawnee’s Reven Venegas with an 81.
Courtney Knippen led Wapak with a 94. Shelby Kohler shot a 99.
Rounding out the Redskin scoring was Hannah Smith at 103 and Bryly Beaman at 104.
“We knew we had a slight advantage on the back nine and we were able to execute that advantage,” West said. Our ladies played anywhere from 2-10 shots better on the back nine and it gave us a chance to catch the leading teams at the turn.”
Wapak has a home match against Celina on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
