Thanks to a 3-0 start, the Wapakoneta Redskins are ranked No. 13 in the first Associated Press state high school football poll released Monday evening.
Wapak is coming off back-to-back Western Buckeye League wins. The Redskins held off Bath 14-13 in Week 3 and defeated Elida, a 2010 playoff team, 29-18 in Week 2.
They routed Bellefontaine 48-0 in the season opener.
The WBL is well represented in the poll. In addition to Wapak in Division II, Kenton is ranked third and Ottawa-Glandorf eighth in Division IV.
Wapak faces O-G on the road on September 30 (Week 6) and Kenton at home on October 28 (Week 10).
Redskins coach Doug Frye has repeatedly said the WBL is the strongest he has seen it in his 14 years in the league.
“It is nice for our football program, school and community to be recognized,” Wapak coach Doug Frye said. “We understand as a team it took a lot of hard work to get where we are.
“We also understand it will take even more to get where we hope to go. The support of our school leaders, staff and community has been phenomenal. We greatly appreciate it.”
