CELINA — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys golf team finished 17th at the 24-team Celina Invitational on Friday at Fox’s Den in Celina.
The inexperienced Wapak squad turned in a team score of 344 but was just a few strokes from finishing in the top half of the pack.
“I was somewhat pleased how we played the course considering only three guys played it a couple of times and two players never played the course,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. “Typically, when you have youth and inexperience golfers scores will be high. We shot a team total of 344, which is high for a golf match but acceptable for a inexperienced team. Therefore, I was pleased what we shot but not so pleased what we placed.”
Napoleon won the event with a 304. Minster was second at 315 followed by Defiance at 316.
“All the WBL teams were there and we finished in the middle of the pack against them,” Wayman said. “The good news is that we were a few strokes shy of being in the top three. We still have a lot of work today particularly our short game. We struggled with too many three-putts and four-putts. In addition, we struggled with our chipping and chipping out of the sand.
Caleb Acheson carded a 75 to lead Wapak. Drew Wayman shot an 83. Bobby Crow carded a 91. Aaron Johnson turned in a 95. Josh Apple rounded out the scoring with a 96.
