The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team defeated the Indian Lake Lakers 213-222 in its first dual match of the season Monday at Wapakoneta Country Club.
Shelby Kohler led the Redskins with a round of 45. Indian Lake’s Morgan Barnett turned in a 42 to edge Kohler for medalist honors.
“Shelby hit the ball well, she just had a little trouble with her shots around the green,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “She is making some changes with her pitching and chipping so it won’t be long before she is more comfortable around the greens. I was very pleased with her round.”
Courtney Knippen carded a 50 for the Redskins. Hannah Smith fired a 58. And Bryly Beaman shot a 60.
“We were a little tentative today, I think mostly in part to it being our first home match of the season,” West said. “We definitely had the advantage of being our home course, but we were a little nervous. The ladies did a good job of hanging in there and working through the nerves and we were able to pull out a win.
“None of the ladies were satisfied with their rounds today because they feel and know they are capable of lower rounds. I am proud of the way they handled themselves, I saw a lot of good shots by all the ladies and as we continue to go about the season we will see them being able to put all the shots together on each hole and have lower rounds.
“Overall I am very pleased with where we are at this early in the season.”
Wapak was back in action this morning at Perrysburg. The Redskins host Bellefontaine on Friday at 4:30 at Wapakoneta Country Club.
