DEFIANCE — The Wapakoneta Redskins girls golf team placed 12th in the 17-team Defiance Invitational on Thursday at the Auglaize Golf Club.
Shawnee was the overall winner, posting a team score of 332. Lima Central Catholic was second at 346.
Wapak carded a 407.
“I thought the ladies played pretty good today,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “We scored better than Tuesday overall but finished higher with a 12th place finish. There were more good caliber teams there today but I felt we held our own and did a nice job out there coming down seven shots from Tuesday.
“The golf course itself is not really long, however the greens are very tough, crowned, hard and fast something we don’t see much out at Wapakoneta Country Club. We are used to fast greens but not crowned and hard.”
Senior Courtney Knippen led the Redskins with a 91.
Sophomore Shelby Kohler recorded a 97. Junior Hannah Smith fired a 106. And Bryly Beaman’s 112 rounded out the Wapak scoring.
“The ladies are starting to see more and more how important course management is to their individual games,” West said. “Courtney did a nice job today of making more pars and had fewer big holes, all of the girls did really. We just need to continue to stress our pitching, chipping and putting. That is where we can really shave strokes off our scores.”
Wapak returns to action Monday at 1 p.m. against Indian Lake.
