CELINA — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team opened its 2011 season by finishing 6th in the 12-team Celina Invitational on Tuesday at The Fox’s Den in Celina.
Wapak compiled a team score of 412. The Shawnee Indians won the event with a 337.
Sophomore Shelby Kohler fired a 94 to lead the way for the Redskins. Senior Courtney Knippen was right behind with a 95.
Junior Hannah Smith carded a 101 and sophomore Bryly Beaman turned in a 122 to round out the scoring for Wapakoneta.
“Overall I was very pleased with how the ladies fared today in their first match of the season,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “I thought they showed a lot of poise during their round.
“We had some holes jump out and get us, but the ladies did a great job of regrouping and working through those holes. Shelby and Courtney both finished 19th and 20th respectively, which is a great start to their season.”
West has three returning letter winners on her squad. But in terms of “golf experience,” her squad is young.
“I thought they played well. It is nice to get a match under our belt so that we can concentrate more on specific areas of each players game,” she said.
The Redskins return to action Thursday morning at 9:30 at Defiance.
