PIQUA — The Wapakoneta Redskins boys golf team opened its 2011 season at the 25th Anniversary Homan Invitational Tournament on Monday in Piqua.
Wapak placed 14th out of the 18 teams competing.
Minster placed first with a 318, followed by Troy at 323 and Sidney Lehman with a 324. Lehman’s Ben Theiman took medalist honors with a 71.
The Redskins are trying to rebuild after losing four of five golfers from 2010 to graduation.
“I was pleased how we played,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. “We had four golfers that are underclassman that never played the course.”
Junior Caleb Acheson shot a team-best 84 for Wapak.
Drew Wayman turned in an respectable 87 despite being just a freshman.
Junior Marshall Gerlach, who had never played a golf tournament, fired a 91.
Sophomore Bobby Crow and junior Aaron Johnson rounded out the Wapak score card with a 92 and a 98, respectively.
“Fortunately, we have no seniors on the team this year,” Ken Wayman said. “This tournament gave us an opportunity to show where we need to improve and build from.
“Hopefully, our kids are eager and are willing to work hard since they got a little taste of what high school tournament golf is all about.”
The Redskins return to action Wednesday when they host the Auglaize County Tournament at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
