CONVOY — Wapakoneta is beginning to master the art of the sixth-inning rally.
And while that may not be good for coach Nick Sammetinger’s blood pressure, it’s good for the win column.
For the second night in a row, Wapak had to come from behind to win, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth inning on its way to a 6-3 win over Crestview in an ACME baseball game Wednesday in Convoy.
On Tuesday, Wapak scored three times in the sixth in a comeback win over New Bremen.
Wednesday night’s rally erased a 3-1 deficit after five innings. Wapak scored three times in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
It was the regular season finale for Wapak (15-2). Sectional tournament play begins Friday at Hanover Street Park in Minster. Wapak plays New Bremen at 6 p.m.
“As I told the team tonight after the game, we now begin our second season and 15-2 means nothing,” Sammetinger said. “We must come ready to play all seven innings each game and keep focus. During the tournament, the best teams take advantage of other teams weaknesses.”
Chandler Kaeck provided the fireworks with a two-run home run. Kaeck was 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Wapak mustered just six hits. Andrew Hines went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and scored once.
“We continue to get behind in the count at the plate,” Sammetinger said. “However, tonight we saw 75-percent off-speed stuff.”
Alex Koch picked up the win. He threw the final 2 2/3 innings, shutting Crestview out. He gave up three hits while striking out two and walking one. Koch is 1-0 on the season.
Marshall Gerlach started on the mound and threw one inning, allowing two hits and one earned run.
Caleb Zweibel relieved Gerlach in the second and pitched 3 1/3 innings. He yielded two runs, both unearned, on just two hits.
“Tonight was more of a tune-up again for two pitchers who have not thrown a lot,” Sammetinger said. “Also, we gave Marshall Gerlach 20 pitches to keep his arm in shape and ready for the weekend.”
Either Gerlach or Brandon Miller is expected to start on Friday.
