ELIDA â Wins are nice, but Wapakoneta Redskins varsity wrestling coach Jason Rostorfer was looking for more than just wins on Thursday night.
He got both as the Redskins swept Elida and Defiance in a Western Buckeye League tri-match at Elida High School.
Wapak edged Elida 38-30 in the opener then rolled past Defiance 48-25 in the second match.
âWe had guys who lost and wrestled well and guys who won and didnât wrestle well,â Rostorfer said. âI donât put a lot of stock in wins and losses. I know thatâs what everybody measures on. But weâve got a lot of young guys in the learning process.â
One of the biggest wins of the night for Wapak was Dallas Ambosâ 12-8 triumph over Austin Arbogast at 126.
âDallas Ambos was probably the wrestler of the week tonight,â Rostorfer said. âI was concerned about that match at the beginning. When he got that win, that was good for us.â
The Brown brothers, Alec and Colton, wrapped up the win for the Redskins. Wapak held a narrow 31-30 lead with two bouts to go.
Alec Brown grabbed an 18-5 major decision over Ian Dukehart at 182 pounds to make it 35-30. Elidaâs Nickoli Sackinger needed to pin Colton Brown in the 195-pound bout for Elida to win. But Brown pulled out a 5-2 decision.
Elida actually outscored Wapak 30-26 in contested bouts. But voids at 106 and 113 pounds cost Elida 12 points.
Rostorfer said his squad bounced back nicely from a disappointing showing last weekend at the Brecksville Holiday Tournament.
Wapak is off until Friday, Jan. 13 when it will head to Alliance for the prestigious Top-Gun tournament.
âIf you never got to a Brecksville or Top Gun, you never know what you need to work on,â Rostorfer said. âThen all of a sudden you get to districts and you make those mistakes and itâs too late. Itâs time to go home. ...
âWeâve got two weeks to fix what we screwed up on at Brecksville.â
