WRESTLING: Redskins struggle at Trojan Duals

December 6, 2011

FINDLAY — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity wrestling opened its season with a tough showing at the Trojan Duals on Saturday at Findlay High School.

Wapak suffered losses to Bluffton and Eaton in pool competition before rebounding to notch wins over Napoleon and Shawnee in bracket competition.

Nate Valentine (138 pounds) posted a 4-0 record in the meet, including a pin in the win over Shawnee.

Junior John Martin had three wins, including a pair of pins, at 106 pounds.

Holden Hengstler won at 195 vs. Bluffton before dropping to 182 in the wins over Napoleon and Shawnee. He won three matches, all by pin.

Devin Knapke won twice at 132, as did Heath Newman at 152.

The Redskins have had to overcome the loss of a number of wrestlers to graduation, including former state champion Logan Erb. And they’ve had to do it without coach Jason Rostorfer, who has been in St. Louis with his wife, who is recovering from spinal surgery.

Olmsted Falls won the Trojan Duals with a 5-0 record. Elmwood was second at 4-1.

Wapak returns to action at 6 tonight in its home opener against Van Wert.
