WAYNESFIELD — “They gave all of their tomorrows for our today,” while formulating what Memorial Day means to him, Lieutenant Colonel David D. Kretz shared this quote, which is seen abroad repeatedly in American cemeteries.
After people lined the streets to watch the annual Memorial Day parade in the Village of Waynesfield, members of the community were invited to Willow Branch Cemetery for Lt. Col Kretz’s speech.
Kretz, a Deputy Commander in the 423rd Air Base Group, 501st Combat Support Wing, Royal Air Force Alconbury, United Kingdom, was reminded of a quote from former Prime Minster of Great Britain, William Gladstone, as he looked across the cemetery at all of the flags and flowers by the graves.
“He said, ‘show me the manner in which a nation cares for it’s dead and I will measure with mathematical exactness the tender mercies of those people, their respect for the laws of the land and the high ideals for which they stand.’,” Kretz said. “I would just like to thank you for your support, as you look across today it is a great turnout. Mayor Ridenour said there are about 800 people in the Village of Waynesfield, I think everyone was out today, but certainly honoring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. It’s a beautiful sight, so thank you for your support.”
