Wayman earns medalist honors at Cardinal Inv.
MINSTER — Wapakoneta junior Drew Wayman shot a 1-under-par 71 to earn the honor of tournament medalist Tuesday at the Cardinal Invitational at Arrowhead Golf Club in Minster.
Wayman and the Redskins finished fourth out of 14 teams Tuesday, as the team shot 340. Wapak also finished fourth last season at the Cardinal Invitational.
Wayman had scores of 36 on the front nine and 35 on the back nine.
“I was very pleased how Drew played today,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “When there are 84 golfers participating, coming in first place as the individual is very impressive.”
In a round that included five birdies, Wayman had back-to-back birdies on holes No. 1 and 2 and holes No. 12 and 13.
“When you get a birdie in a round, it helps your score, but when you get five birdies in a round, it helps it tremendously. In Drew’s case, it helped him to get under par,” Wayman said. “He had a fantastic round.”
Bobby Crow was second for Wapak with an 82 on Tuesday. Ryan Hunlock (93) and Jared Miller (94) completed the Redskins’ scoring.
“I would love to see more individuals in the 80s. When we do that, we can be a good team,” Wayman said. “Hopefully, it will come soon.”
The Botkins Trojans were eighth in Tuesday’s tournament with a team score of 364.
Nick Okuley (85) and Seth Hanna (86) led the way for the Trojans, while Spencer Stutsman (94) and Josh Miller (99) finished the scoring for Botkins.
Minster edged Versailles by one stroke, 320-321, for the team title Tuesday.
St. Marys placed fifth behind Wapak at 344.
St. Marys’ Carter Bowman was the second overall finisher with a 74.
