Wapakoneta rallies to beat Indian Lake by 1
The Wapakoneta Redskins finished strong after a weak start Thursday in their 205-206 victory over the Indian Lake Lakers in a varsity girls golf match at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Wapak gained seven shots on Indian Lake’s first two players on hole No. 8 and then shot just 1-over-par on the ninth and final hole to squeak by for the one-stroke win.
Wapak sophomore Emily Klopfenstein came in with a 55 in the final group to best teammate Sierra Sammons’ 56 from the previous group, giving the Redskins the win.
“It was great to see the ladies really dig deep and and pull out this win,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said. “It was an eye-opener for the ladies to realize that we are never out of the match until the last putt goes in.”
Wapak’s Shelby Kohler was the match medalist at 47.
Also for the Redskins, Zoe Rayburn notched a 50, and Haley Kinstle posted a 53.
“We made a lot of mistakes early on, things we know not to do, and we kept repeating mistakes for about the first four holes,” West said. “When we got to hole No. 5, we made what we call “our turn” and made some very good golf shots to start a great run to close the gap.
“Indian Lake was playing well, and we were struggling,” she said. “However, we started one shot at a time, one hole at a time and then we started to get some momentum in our games.”
Morgan Barnette paced Indian Lake with a 48.
The win put Wapak’s season record at 5-2 overall.
The Redskins will return to action Monday with a home match against Defiance.
