Wapakoneta moves from 1st to 3rd in region
From staff reports
After three straight weeks as the top team in their region, the Wapakoneta Redskins moved to third in the penultimate weekly computer ratings for prep football, released Tuesday by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Wapakoneta (8-1) was ranked first in Division III, Region 10 from Oct. 8 until Tuesday.
Although they have already unofficially clinched a playoff berth, the Redskins would like to remain in the top four of their region in order to play their first playoff game at home, as the top four teams in each region for Divisions II through VII will host regional quarterfinal games at their home site. The top eight teams in Division I’s two regions will host regional games at their home site.
Altogether, the top eight teams in each region for Divisions II through VII will qualify for the playoffs, while the top 16 teams in each of Division I’s two regions will make the playoffs.
The final games of the regular season will be completed by week’s end, and the final computer ratings determining playoff berths will be released around noon Sunday by the OHSAA.
The Redskins, looking for their eighth consecutive win, will play the Shawnee Indians (2-7) on Friday for their final game of the regular season in Western Buckeye League action.
Aside from Wapak, other WBL schools are in contention for playoff berths, with Kenton and Defiance having already unofficially clinched.
Kenton (9-0) is back to second in Division IV, Region 12 after being rated third the past two editions.
Kenton, the No. 1 team in Division IV in the Associated Press poll, is the lone team to beat Wapakoneta this season.
For the fourth straight week, Defiance (6-3) retained its spot in seventh place in Division III, Region 8.
Celina (7-2), which lost to Kenton last Friday, entered the game ranked eighth in Division III, Region 10, but fell to ninth in Tuesday’s ratings.
Only one other Wapakoneta opponent was listed in the top 12 of their respective region.
Bellefontaine (4-5) was rated 11th in Division III, Region 10 on Tuesday.
Bellefontaine, which Wapak beat in Week 1, is all but eliminated from playoff contention, with just shy of 9 points while the top 10 teams in the region each have at least 13.
