The Wapakoneta Redskins had three strong scores in their opening match Thursday. They just needed another one to pull out a win.

The Redskins fell by two strokes, 191-193, to the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets in a non-league varsity girls golf match Thursday at Wapakoneta Country Club.

The Redskins’ first group consisting of Sierra Sammons and Emily Klopfenstein each shot 44 to tie for match medalist honors Thursday.

Haley Kinstle followed with a 45. Kasey Carrico contributed Wapakoneta’s fourth score with a 59.

“They did a little better than I was thinking coming out for the first match at home,” Wapakoneta coach Dawn West said. “Wapakoneta Country Club plays tougher than most of the other courses we play. We played very well. We played smart. The girls are picking up on the fine-tuning things we’ve been talking to them about.”

West said with an Aug. 1 first practice date, time before the season is limited. Plus, her team was unable to practice on one of the days in between.

That said, the coach was pleased with her team’s performance Thursday.

“There was such a short amount of practice time before matches got rolling,” West said. “I was very happy.”

Wapakoneta (0-1) will compete in the Celina Bulldog Girls Golf Invitational today at Fox’s Den Golf Course in Celina.
