Alex Gossard shot a career-low to help the Wapakoneta Redskins shoot a season-low 163 in their two-stroke win Tuesday over the Celina Bulldogs in Western Buckeye League varsity boys golf action at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Jared Miller’s 44 came from Wapak’s final group and helped decide the match. The Redskins needed a 46 or better after the first two groups came in.
Gossard’s 40 from the second group aided veterans Drew Wayman (39) and Bobby Crow (40) from Wapak’s first group.
“When Alex shot a 40, I knew we would have a real good chance of winning the match,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “I hope he continues to shoot that low. More importantly, Alex knows he is perfectly capable of posting low numbers.”
Wayman’s 39 tied for match co-medalist honors with Celina’s Stephen Fleck.
Tuesday was the first time this season Miller’s score counted in a nine-hole match.
Also playing for Wapak on Tuesday were Nick Bruns (46) and Wesley Ruedebusch (51).
Wayman said a good round was required of his team Tuesday in order to beat Celina.
“We had to post a good team score to keep up with the consistent Celina Bulldogs,” the coach said. “Fortunately, we accomplished the task. We had our team low score of the year and it couldn’t come at a better time.
“Lately, Celina was posting some really good scores and they had some good wins,” he said. “I knew coming in today, we had to shoot around 165 to have a chance to win.”
The win moved Wapak’s season record to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the WBL.
The Redskins will continue their season Thursday with a road match in WBL action against the Defiance Bulldogs.
