The Wapakoneta Redskins scored three goals Thursday but one was on an own goal late in their 2-1 win over the Allen East Mustangs in non-league varsity girls soccer action.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half before Wapak tallied two straight goals to take the lead for good in the second half.
Wapak varsity coach Ross Kantner described adjustments his team needed to make to break through on the scoreboard.
“In the first half we didn’t play real smart and didn’t play to our capabilities,” Kantner said. “I challenged them to play to abilities and play our game, mostly to step up and play the way we play.”
To begin the scoring, at 28:07, Kylee Dahman scored on a header from an assist by Claire Burton who crossed the ball from the left sideline.
Wapak’s second goal came from the right sideline, with Dahman crossing one in front of the net for Mackenzie Custer, who booted the ball into the net at 13:14 left to play.
“Both of them were nice crosses,” Kantner said. “One of the things we talked about at halftime was the forwards getting shots on goal. We have a tendency to get shots but blow it over the top or something.”
The shutout ended when a kick by Allen East’s Sierra Silone resulted in an own goal off the head off of a Wapakoneta defender.
“As I told the kids, I’m not too upset because we scored three goals tonight,” Kantner said jokingly about the own goal Thursday. “If you play defense long enough, you’re going to have an own goal. We just have to understand that if you’re going to go up for a head ball, you have to knock it out and not allow it to go over the top.
“It was one of the those ‘tweeners for the goalie of whether she should go out and get it,” he said. “She got caught in the middle.”
Wapak goalkeeper Brooke Schlenker saved all five shots on goal Thursday.
The win put Wapak’s season record at 8-3-0 overall.
The Redskins will continue their season Monday at home against the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans in a Western Buckeye League contest.
It is a varsity only event starting at 6 p.m.
