The Wapakoneta Redskins recorded another close win Thursday in their 172-176 victory over the Elida Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys golf match at the Wapakoneta Country Club. Wapak edged Greenville, 172-174, on Tuesday.
Elida was winning Thursday’s match by four strokes until Wapak’s No. 5 player, Alex Gossard, turned in a 44, to give the Redskins a four-stroke win.
Wapakoneta senior Bobby Crow was the match medalist Thursday with a 39.
Crow was 5-over-par through seven holes but recorded two birdies over the final three holes.
Drew Wayman shot a 40 after going 4-over the final four holes with an even start through five.
Nick Bruns’ 49 was Wapak’s fourth score Thursday. Ryan Hunlock had a 52 and Jared Miller tallied a 57.
Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman assessed his team’s performance.
“Fortunately, we came up with the victory,” Wayman said. “We still continue to have double bogeys, triple bogeys and quads. We need to limit those if we want to continue to win. Eventually, those holes will haunt us in the future.
“For example, we were 12-over as a team on number 4 as well as number 5 and eight over on hole 6,” he said. “If we just bogey them, we are 18-over versus 32-over. That’s a 14 stroke difference.”
Wayman described the conditions Thursday.
“The conditions today were not easy,” Wayman said Thursday. “The wind was picking up throughout the round. When the wind picks up at the Wapakoneta Country Club, it makes it longer on the tougher holes.”
The Redskins’ win Thursday improved their season record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the WBL.
Wapakoneta’s next event is the Allen East Invitational, which will be played starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Springbrook Golf Club in Lima.
