WAYNESFIELD — The Wapakoneta Redskins won their first match of the season Monday as they handled the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers, 188-238, in non-league varsity girls golf action at Prairie View Golf Club in Waynesfield.

Monday’s result evened both teams’ 2013 overall records at 1-1.

The Redskins’ top four scorers each bested the Tigers’ top scorer.

Wapakoneta’s Shelby Kohler was Monday’s match medalist with a 41. Also for the Redskins, Haley Kinstle posted a 48, Emily Klopfenstein shot a 49 and Sierra Sammons carded a 50.

Chelsea Spencer’s 51 led W-G on Monday. Kennedy Rumer followed with a 56, Elva Anne Shephard scored a 62 and Hannah Williams shot a 69.

Wapak varsity coach Dawn West updated her team’s progress Monday.

“We are playing very steady and consistent golf right now. Even though our numbers have been good, we know there is still room for improvement,” West said. “I think the ladies are seeing that shooting in the mid 40’s consistently is only a few shots away from reality for them and that Shelby is only a few shots away from being steadily in the upper 30’s.

“It all comes down to getting better and better with the short game. We are a great ball striking team we just need to fine tune around and on the greens,” she said. “The girls are very poised and playing with confidence and having fun doing it.”

W-G, which is completing its first ever girls golf season in school history, won its first match of the season Friday over Fort Recovery, 265-270.

W-G varsity coach Gary Spencer evaluated his team’s progress from its first match Friday to the second one Monday.

“We’ve improved immensely. Their nerves were at ease,” Spencer said. “We went from a 265 to a 238, and that’s all we can ask from a program that’s just starting. I can’t ask for more than that.” Spencer described what is the foremost priority for his team at this point.

“It’s just being around the game. We’re still learning the fundamentals,” Spencer said. “Time and effort is what we’re asking from them, and they’re doing that thus far.”

The Redskins are slated to play in the Defiance Lady Bulldog Golf Invitational starting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance.

The Tigers are scheduled to compete in the Benjamin Logan Lady Raider Invitational beginning at 9 a.m. today at Tree Links Golf Course in Bellefontaine.
