Able to avoid an afternoon storm in the area, the Wapakoneta Redskins focused on their match against the Shawnee Indians and came away with a 191-196 win Wednesday in varsity girls golf action at Oak’s Golf Club in Lima.
Wapak senior Shelby Kohler was Wednesday’s match medalist with a nine-hole score of 43.
“Shelby continues to be our steady leader,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said. “She is playing very consistently and being a great leader for us.”
Zoe Rayburn had a 49, as did Sierra Sammons, whose score was a season-low. Haley Kinstle posted a 50 to complete Wapak’s scoring.
Jennifer Mitchell had a 45 to lead Shawnee. Haleigh Jordan and McKenzie Whitaker each notched 47, and Bailey Gillen shot 57.
“We were fortunate to get this match in with all the storms that were going on and off all around us,” West said.
Rain fell in the area of Oak’s Golf Club till about 20 minutes before the start of the 1 p.m. match. Lightning, heavy rain and a tiny bit of hail hit parts of Wapakoneta while the match was ongoing. West reviewed Wednesday’s match.
“This was a good match between Shawnee and ourselves,” West said. “We are both young teams experience-wise so we matched up well.
"Our ball striking is continuing to get better and better each time we are out,” she said. “We will continue to stress short game putting chipping that will be where the improvement comes from.”
The win, Wapak’s third straight, moved the team to 3-1 this season.
Wapak will return to action at 4 p.m. Friday with a match against Minster at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
