Wapakoneta City Schools Superintendent Keith Horner
School board policies were updated and compensation for members approved Tuesday by Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members.
Compensation for the board’s five members for 2013 was set at $125 per meeting, up to a limit of 12 meetings annually.
Wapakoneta City Schools Superintendent Keith Horner said the rate has not increased since 2005.
Twenty-four board policies were updated to eliminate, “I am not a terrorist” language. The changes were specified by the state and were part of periodic updates to the policies, with more anticipated in January. Changes at this point were minimal.
Board members made preparations for its organizational meeting planned for Jan. 8 and approved a legal assistance fund consultant service contract for 2013 at a cost of $250.
In personnel matters, board members approved the resignation of Marc Dyrness as varsity boys soccer coach.
Horner did not comment further on why Dyrness was leaving but said he expected the position to be posted soon by Wapakoneta City Schools Athletic Director Brad Rex.
Board members also approved the retirement of Diane Schlosser, effective Feb. 22. Schlosser is a cafeteria worker at Wapakoneta Middle School. She was employed with the district since 1986.
“We congratulate her,” Horner said. “She has been with us a long time.”
Board members approved the employment of Nikki Barger as a para-educator working with special needs students and teachers and making $11.84 an hour for 3 ½ hours a day beginning Dec. 10.
“It’s an indirect result of meeting with teachers about numbers,” Horner said.
He anticipated coming back to the board in January and asking them to employ Barger in another part-time position.
Board members also approved a supplemental contract for Sean Boley as assistant baseball coach, at a salary of more than $2,953.
In other personnel matters, board members:
• Approved eight casual laborers for calendar year 2013.
• Approved two substitute teachers, four substitute para-educators, four substitute secretaries, and a transportation substitute.
• Approved seven substitute custodians for 2013.
Board members met in executive session following the regular meeting to discuss the appointment or employment of a public employee or official with no action taken.
Miscellaneous band expense donations were made for $6,400 by the band boosters; Kim and Kristie Koenig, $60; Frank Scenna and Heather Bailey, $50, Jim and Kathy Bernhold, $20; and Jim and Denise Kantner, $20.
McDonald’s (MAC grant) donations were accepted for $425 for the ambassador club and $499 for supplies for an annual economics project. Bruce Campbell donated $300 to the Hall of Fame and SETEX donated school supplies.
